Web Soil Survey

Image
Using the USDA Web Soil Survey (WSS) was an eye-opening experience, especially as a resident of Oahu. The process began with navigating the "4 Basic Steps" outlined on the website, which were quite user-friendly. These steps guided me from defining my area of interest (AOI) to exploring detailed soil data. I started by familiarizing myself with the menus on both sides of the page, which offered a range of options for soil data and analysis. To better understand this, I followed along with the video tutorial, pausing frequently to experiment with the various features of the WSS. This hands-on approach was incredibly helpful in grasping the full potential of the tool. One of the most fascinating aspects was the ability to apply different filters to the data. I focused on an AOI around my home in Oahu, which allowed me to explore the soil health in my immediate surroundings. A particularly interesting filter was the one for "military operations" and Bivouac areas. Give...

Exploring Climate Resources for Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District

Exploring Climate Resources for Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District When it comes to studying the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District in Hawaii, there is definitely a wealth of resources that can offer valuable insights into the area's climate and environmental conditions. I've created a list of various local/national resources that can help deepen our understanding of the region's climate, marine life, and conservation efforts. Resources: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Website: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/ This is a comprehensive resource for climate data and information. The NCEI provides access to a wide range of climate-related data that can be useful for understanding trends and changes in the marine environment around Pūpūkea. NOAA Climate Program Office Website: https://cpo.noaa.gov/ This site offers extensive climate resources, including data, tools, and reports that are essential for climate research. It's particularly usef...

Mapping: ArcGIS, Google Maps & DIVA

Image
I have had a lot of experience with GIS/mapping in undergrad. However, using the google map tool made it incredibly easy to generate detailed and useful maps. For my project, I focused on my study area which is the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District, which again, is a protected area that plays a critical role in preserving marine biodiversity. This area is home to various species that are essential for maintaining the ecological balance, and it's crucial that we monitor and protect it effectively. Using the mapping tool, I was able to highlight several key environmental concerns and conservation efforts within this district. One of the main features I added to my map was a series of pinpoints indicating sites of bank erosion around the district. Bank erosion can lead to significant land loss and negatively impact the surrounding marine ecosystems, so it's important to identify and address these areas promptly. Next, I focused on a local beach within the conservation di...

Preliminary thoughts on the Importance of Biodiversity

Image
Biodiversity, encompassing the genetic diversity within species, the variety of species themselves, and the range of ecosystems they form, is crucial at all scales—from local to international. Locally, in areas such as the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) on O‘ahu's North Shore, biodiversity reflects the health of the ecosystem and supports its productivity. This diverse marine and terrestrial habitat, including over 80 unique fish species and numerous algae, coral, and invertebrates, plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance and resilience of the area. The diverse ecosystem services provided, such as nutrient cycling and water purification, are essential for the well-being of local communities and the sustainability of regional fisheries through the spillover effect. Regionally and nationally, the importance of biodiversity extends to broader ecological stability and economic benefits. Healthy ecosystems like Pūpūkea MLCD contribute to the larger Haw...

Biodiversity Definition

Biodiversity refers to the immense variety of species alive on Earth, encompassing the genetic diversity within species, the variety of species themselves, and the range of ecosystems they form. This variety is telling of a particular ecosystem's health and is fundamental for the distribution and productivity of ecosystem services. Biodiversity contributes to ecosystem resilience, enabling ecosystems to withstand and recover from disturbances. It supports vital processes such as pollination, nutrient cycling, soil formation, and water purification and other important systems that support life on Earth.

Why Choose the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District?

Image
The rationale for choosing the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) as a study area is multi-faceted, emphasizing its unique ecological, cultural, and management significance. Situated on the North Shore of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, the Pūpūkea MLCD spans approximately 100 acres and includes a mile of coastline. This protected area offers a valuable opportunity to study biodiversity due to its rich and diverse ecosystems. Home to a vast array of native marine life, including many endangered species, the MLCD's habitats—ranging from submarine caves and high-wave impact zones to the Kapo‘o Tidepool—support over 80 fish species, 30 algae species, and numerous coral and invertebrate species.  The dynamic nature of Pūpūkea MLCD, with seasonal high wave activity and unique brackish water conditions, provides a natural laboratory for examining marine ecology and wave impact effects. Additionally, the area's biodiversity plays a crucial role in replenishing fish stocks in surrounding...
