Biodiversity Definition

Biodiversity refers to the immense variety of species alive on Earth, encompassing the genetic diversity within species, the variety of species themselves, and the range of ecosystems they form. This variety is telling of a particular ecosystem's health and is fundamental for the distribution and productivity of ecosystem services. Biodiversity contributes to ecosystem resilience, enabling ecosystems to withstand and recover from disturbances. It supports vital processes such as pollination, nutrient cycling, soil formation, and water purification and other important systems that support life on Earth.
